Soft skills development

In fact, in some specific career transition or external environment conditions you may need to redefine the goals themselves and find new paths to reach them. To do this you need to be equipped with appropriate skills and competence.

The Italian Institute for the Development of Vocational Training for Workers (ISFOL) distinguishes between foundation generic skills, job-specific technical (hard skills) and soft skills.

According to the operational definition given by the European Qualifications Framework (2008), “competence is the proven ability to use knowledge, skills and personal, social and/or methodological abilities in work or study situations as well as in professional and personal development”.

Soft skills are particularly appreciated and sought-after by employers, being considered high value-added.

ASPIC LAVORO runs soft skills development programs, including self-assessment & development, coaching and training (certified with "Bollino Verde").

A non exhaustive selection of important sought-after transferable soft skills:

  • teamwork;
  • flexibility;
  • adaptability;
  • organizational skills;
  • autonomy;
  • interpersonal and communication skills;
  • ability to listen and understand internal and external customers’ needs;
  • leadership;
  • problem solving;
  • conflict resolution and negotiation;
  • team and network coordination and management;
  • creativity and innovation;
  • decision making (ability to make decisions and choose among alternatives);
  • management capacity;
  • analytic and synthetic abilities;
  • social and emotional intelligence.

Among these, emotional intelligence skills (including self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, etc.) are the foundation on which the others are built upon.

Although these skills may not be specific to different professional roles, it is also true that according to the type of work some  of those will be considered more important than others.

Soft skills are trasferable in different situations both at work and in private life. Being able to make this transfer requires:

  • awareness and ability to recognize them;
  • a sense of mastery;
  • the ability to put them into practice with flexibility and adaptability, in a manner that is functional to the specific context or situation.

During career and working life transitions - including expatriation - consolidated soft skills facilitate a rapid, smooth and efficient adjustment to changes and to new environments, in both work and personal life (EURES The European Mobility Portal).
